Diving In: Summer Swimming with Eczema, My Routine for Sea & Pool
25 July 2025
I love summer! The sun, the sea, swimming... but as an Eczema Warrior, every swim is a balancing act - IYKYK! Over the years I have learned to lean into the benefits of saltwater and protect my skin from chlorine, to keep flares at bay.
Here is my step-by-step routine for both sea and pool swims, so you can make the most of beach days and pool days alike.
1. Sea Swimming: Embracing the Saltwater Soothe
I will be honest: nothing makes me feel more alive than diving into salty waves. My skin drinks up that soothing salty-ness, and its natural, anti-inflammatory properties can calm irritation like nothing else.
But when a flare is raging, the initial sting can feel brutal.
Here's what I've come to learn:
- Pat Dry Immediately: After my final dip, I gently pat myself dry with a soft towel (sneaky recommendation: SilverGuard Towels). Rubbing can aggravate sensitive patches, so I let the towel do the work for me.
- Seal in Moisture: I apply Calma Ezzence right away because its rich, buttery texture is the most soothing option I know if. I smooth a generous layer all over, paying special attention to the driest patches. My skin seems to "eat up" every last drop, so I will reapply on extra-dry spots until I feel fully comfortable.
- Sunscreen Finale: Once Calma is fully absorbed (usually just a minute or two), I top everything with my favourite Altruist SPF50 family sun spray and face fluid. This dual approach keeps both body and face protected without stinging my skin.
- Cooling Mist: On particularly warm days, I spritz the Byoma face mist for instant refreshment. It is light, hydrating, and soothes any heat on my cheeks.
2. Pool Swimming: Outsmarting Chlorine
Chlorinated water can strip every ounce of moisture from my skin if I am not careful. I have adapted my routine to outsmart the pool's drying effects so I can enjoy my laps without paying the price later.
- Pre-Swim Shield: For super-dry or sore patches, I apply a thin layer of Balmonds Skin Salvation before entering the pool. On my face (always the most sensitive), I smooth on Calma Ezzence as a protective buffer.
- Rinse Thoroughly: Immediately after swimming, I rinse off under fresh water- this is crucial to wash away residual chlorine before it can continue to dry me out.
- Moisturise Again: Back on dry land, I reapply Calma Ezzence head-to-toe - but you can use any of your favourite moisturisers of course. My skin has already started to crave hydration, so I do not hesitate to layer until every patch feels soothed.
- Finish with SPF: As with my sea routine, I follow up with Altruist SPF50 spray and face fluid once the moisturiser is absorbed.
- Mid-Day Mist: If I am pool-side for hours, I keep that Byoma face mist on hand for a midday cool-down and a little extra drop of hydration.
Takeaway: Swim, Soothe, Repeat
Swimming - whether in the sea or a pool - should feel like freedom, not a trigger for flare-ups. By patting dry, layering in barrier-boosting moisture, smart pre-swim shields, and a reliable sunscreen, I get to enjoy every dip with confidence. Remember: it is not about avoiding water; it is about giving your skin the care it needs to thrive, so you can dive into summer with joy, not dread. Ask me anything in the comments: What is your favorite water escape, and how do you keep your skin happy? ☀️
